Kelfer Hayward Hartley (1909-1988) was a Professor of French at Newcastle University from 1965 to 1969. During his long career as a secondary school teacher and academic, he endeared himself to generations of students with his dedication to his subject and his gentle eccentricity. His $2 million bequests to Newcastle University provide a number of student scholarships and prizes each year to help students further their studies in French in Australia and abroad.

This program is designed to support overseas students who are about to enroll in an undergraduate degree program. Newcastle University offers a wide range of degrees in a number of areas. Eligibility Criteria for Kelfer Hayward

• Study any year of an undergraduate degree at Newcastle University.
  Major in French.
• Demonstrate the impact of personal circumstances such as carer, single parent, financial hardship, English language difficulty, Aboriginal Australia, the impact of long-term medical condition or abuse, disability, refugee status, regional/remote disadvantage.
• No other scholarships funded or sponsored by a Newcastle University donor may be awarded at the same time.
