Energy Innovation MSc (Research) at Swansea Increasing the efficiency of fridges

Fully Funded KESS II MSc by Research Scholarship: Design study on increasing the efficiency of fridges through the appliance of carbon nanotubes

*This scholarships is a component funded by the Welsh Government’s European Social Fund (ESF) convergence programme for East Wales.*

Using nanotube materials that were made via chemical recycling of waste plastic materials, the research will create devices to enhance the capacity and efficiency of refrigeration devices. This proposal is about increasing energy efficiency of refrigeration devices. The devices are going to be supported the utilization of carbon nanotubes. Researchers at Swansea University’s Energy Safety Research Institute (ESRI) have developed protocols for creating carbon nanotubes via a chemical recycling process. especially , the method involves the utilization of waste plastics and mixed plastics as carbon source for the synthesis of carbon nanotubes, wherein the plastics are sourced from healthcare products. This work will use nanotubes made up of healthcare plastic materials to check for improvements within the efficiency of fridges.

Carbon nanotubes are interesting materials thanks to their unique heat transfer properties. Refrigeration units work by changing the state of a cloth from a liquid to a vapour, and the other way around . The expansion and contraction of the fabric between the liquid and vapour state causes natural process s and this temperature change is how fridges operate. the foremost efficient systems can accomplish this by using the smallest amount amount of energy and in an economic standpoint, by lasting the longest amount of your time . Refrigeration requires two reversible physical processes to occur, i.e. condensation and evaporation. Firstly, materials condense on a surface which process is improved by having materials with larger surface areas. Then, evaporation occurs to vary the state back to vapour. This phase change occurs when heat conducts from the surface of the component to the fluid material and this process is improved by using materials with high heat transfer coefficients. The efficiency of the device is additionally improved if the lifetime are often extended several years, this will be achieved by employing a sturdy material like carbon nanotubes.

This work are going to be wiped out two phases, firstly a full set of design parameters are going to be tested and calculated to work out the utmost efficiencies when using carbon nanotubes because the phase transition medium within the various configurations. This work are often done as performing from home if needed.

In the second phase, the scholar would create a refrigeration device and use carbon nanotubes that are created at ESRI to verify initial values.

In conclusion, this work can prevent the build-up of fabric in landfill sites, thus decreasing environmental impact of plastic refuse within the environment. Moreover, this work will contribute a carbon neutral economy both by sinking carbon into a functional material, and by using that functional material to decrease energy demand via improved efficiencies.

Scholarships are collaborative awards with external partners including SMEs and micro companies, also as public and third sector organisations. The scholarship provides 1 year funding with a 3 month period to finish the thesis. The achievement of a postgraduate skills development award, PSDA, is compulsory for every KESS II scholar and is predicated on a 40 credit award.
