Brief description:
The Institute of Development Studies (IDS) at the University of Sussex is offering up to five scholarships to encourage high-achieving scholars from the worldwide South to review for a master’s degree in development-related subjects commencing AY 2020. The scholarships are available to international students from lower- or middle-income countries who have accepted a full-time place on an IDS master’s degree. Priority is going to be given to students who have the best potential to form a difference in their home countries after completing the degree.
These scholarships are jointly endowed by the Allan and Nesta Ferguson public trust, the Albertina Scholarship Fund, and therefore the estate of Sir Hans Singer.

Scholarship value/inclusions:
The scholarship will contribute towards tuition fees for a taught full-time master’s degree plus essential living costs. The award amount is up to £18,500 for fees and up to £11,000 for essential living costs.
Eligibility:
Applicants must be nationals of and residents in lower or middle-income countries. See the official website (link found below) for all eligible countries.
To be considered for the scholarship, applicants must:
- have received and accepted a suggestion of an area on a full-time taught IDS master’s degree
- have proven academic skills and a longtime career with a diary of excellence and achievement within the field of development
- be ready to demonstrate, through your previous experience and future plans, that you simply are committed to working for development – be it educational, economic, social, or cultural – in your home country
- not have studied nor worked during a high-income (developed) country
- meet all of IDS and therefore the University of Sussex’s general entrance requirements.
- have received an unconditional offer on an eligible Masters by 30 April 2020.
