Engineering: Fully Funded MSc (Res): The Effect of Discolouration in Cobalt Alloy Welding Rods

This project will investigate the effect discolouration on welding rods has on the general mechanical behavior, microstructure and chemistry of the welded joint. a good range of colors are observed on 3.2mmØ Cobalt-6 welding rods from straw, through gold to blue/dark purple and eventually grey, thanks to the character of the method used. Three typical colours are chosen for the needs of investigation, namely: straw, gold and dark blue/purple. it’s been observed on some occasions that when the various coloured rods are used the perceived weldability can vary leading to changes in performance, possibly thanks to changes within the microstructure and/or oxide characteristics. However, in some applications satisfactory performance has been noted.

Project Aims:

It is believed that the rods are an equivalent chemistry no matter the color . However, the chemistry of the oxides developing on such rods has never been investigated. The aforementioned outcomes have made this project open for investigation. The sponsor company, Weartech International, will supply various discoloured rods (these are going to be cut accordingly to a typical length of 10mm and delivered to Swansea University). Also, the chemistry of the substrate rods are going to be supplied as a reference. the scholar will investigate:

The microstructure of every discoloured rod utilising an appropriate etchant for the supplied material (alloy composition is required at this stage to save lots of time).
The chemistry of the oxide layer utilising advanced methods e.g. Energy-dispersive X-ray spectroscopy (EDS).
The hardness from the highest surface of the oxide layer to the substrate material of the rod.
The relation between the drawing rate and cooling speeds of the welding rods and therefore the discolouration effects.
The relation between the drawing rate vs. hardness (for each discoloured rod).
The relation between the cooling rate vs. hardness (for each discoloured rod).
The relation between the melt temperature during boiling vs. hardness and colour (for each batch).
The relation between the drawing and cooling rate vs. the weather in each rod.
The exact freezing point of discoloured rods employing a differential scanning calorimetry device (DSC) – the discolouration might affect the freezing point during welding. Therefore, this might provides a relation between colour and therefore the freezing point of the rod.
At the top of the project, it’s expected to possess a far better understanding of the possible effects of a variety of oxide discolouration and their interrelationship with the welding rod chemistry and/or microstructure on weldability. The project also will derive useful relations between the key variables during manufacturing, on one hand, and therefore the nature of discolouration, on the opposite hand. This project also will provide a chance for the potential student to realize hands-on experience in materials preparation, investigation and important thinking associated with the manufacturing process utilised.

Eligibility

  • We welcome applications from candidates with a degree (minimum level 2:1) in Materials Science and Engineering, but will accept other physical sciences disciplines (Engineering, Physics, Chemistry), or equivalent relevant experience that might enable the candidate to fulfil the role.
  • We would normally expect candidates to possess met the University’s English requirements (e.g. IELTS 6.5 overall with 5.5+ in each component) by point of application.
  • Due to funding restrictions, this scholarship isn’t hospitable ‘International’ candidates.
