The Gus Archie Memorial Scholarship is supported by the SPE Foundation and awards an impressive student who plans to enter a university and pursue an undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering.

Officially founded in 1957, SPE’s predecessor organizations go back the birth of the refining industry within the late 1880s.

SPE may be a not-for-profit association whose members are engaged in energy resources development and production. SPE may be a key resource for technical knowledge associated with the oil and gas exploration and production industry, and provides services through publications, events, training courses. Income from SPE events and services are invested back to SPE to support many other society programs.

Gustave E. Archie
(1907 – 1978)

Gus Archie, a pioneer within the area of formation evaluation, developed the elemental quantitative relationships among porosity, electrical resistivity, and hydrocarbon saturation of rocks that laid the inspiration for contemporary log interpretation. His study, entitled “The Electrical Resistivity Log as an Aid in Determining Some Reservoir Characteristics” (Transactions of AIME, 1942), may be a milestone in petroleum technology. Archie is credited with coining the term “petrophysics,” and his fundamental formula is understood throughout the industry because the “Archie Formula.”

Eligibility

  • This is a merit based scholarship. Recipients are typically within the top 3% in both class ranking and standardized test scores.
  • Must shall enroll in petroleum engineering during a recognized university program consistent with your country or region, resulting in an undergraduate degree in petroleum engineering Must become an SPE member once eligible suits sanction policy Complete the electronic application submission process

If awarded, each semester, you must:

Be enrolled during a petroleum engineering class by the start of the second year of university Remain in petroleum engineering course of study Maintain a minimum of 2/3 of a full academic load Have and maintain a satisfactory average of scores/marks for the present semester and cumulative total

Benefits

The recipient will receive USD 5,000 per annum for up to four years of university study.

Scholarships are awarded 70%-75%
