More than 2 million cancer cases worldwide are caused by infectious causes ([Plummer et al.]). recent major advances in understanding the relationship between viral infections and microbiota and different types of cancer ([Nejman et al., 2020]), including work published by our group ([Zapatka et al., 2020]). the UEA’s cancer genetics team are experts in this field, isolating bacterial strains from clinical samples of men with prostate cancer and developing bioinformatics pipelines to detect bacteria in clinical cancer samples ([Gihawi et al., 2019]). Analysis of whole-genome sequencing data of bacteria isolated from urine and prostate has provided preliminary evidence of several potential mechanisms of action of bacteria potentially relevant to cancer research.
