Like many other stars, the Sun has an outer atmosphere (the corona) that is several orders of magnitude hotter than its surface (the photosphere); rising from a temperature of about 6000 K in the photosphere, the corona can reach temperatures in the millions of degrees. This project will focus on the computational modeling of MHD waves in the solar atmosphere. Recent high-concentration and high-resolution observations have revealed the presence of a large number of waves, oscillations, and other quasi-periodic perturbations in the solar atmosphere. These observed waves are reported to contain large amounts of energy. However, the role of waves and oscillations in coronal heating remains unclear, and estimating energy budgets from observations is not easy due to superposition effects in the solar atmosphere and uncertainties in the identification of observed wave patterns.

Eligibility Criteria for University of St Andrews

• All nationalities are eligible to participate in this program
• Acceptable courses or subjects. This sponsorship will award a Ph.D. in Applied Mathematics.
• Applicants must not already (i) hold a Ph.D.; or (ii) have matriculated to a Ph.D. at the University of St Andrews or another institution.
